Which version of Castaway should I install: the 32-bit version or the 64-bit version?
The version of Castaway you should install depends on the type of Windows operating system running on your computer.
- If the Operating System is 32-bit, you MUST install the 32-bit version of Castaway
- If the Operating System is 64-bit, you CAN CHOOSE to install either the 32-bit or 64-bit versions of Castaway. 32-bit is generally sufficient, but if you are working with very large Castaway forecasts or consolidations, we recommend the 64-bit version
What is the difference between 32-bit and 64-bit?
Without getting too technical, it comes down to memory. A 32-bit version can only access around 3.5GB of your computer's RAM (even if the computer has more than 3.5GB installed). A 64-bit version can generally access all of the RAM available. This means the 64-bit version may be more responsive if you tend to keep lots of applications open at the same time, or if you are working on very large Castaway forecasts or consolidations.
How can I tell if my computer is running a 32-bit or a 64-bit version of Windows?
To check which Windows operating system you are running, go to the Control Panel and then find the System information. The System Type will be clearly shown (similar to the screenshot below).
